1. World Mental Health Day

  • World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October every year all over the world.
  • The aim is to raise awareness about the growing suicide cases around the world and also how an individual can play an important role in reducing it.
  • The day is organized by the World Federation for Mental Health and also supported by the World Health Organisation,  the International Association for Suicide Prevention & United for Global Mental Health.

2. National Postal Day

  • National Postal Day is celebrated on 10 October every year.
  • The day is celebrated to commemorate the role played by the Indian Postal Department in the last 150 years.

3. Saudi Women are allowed to serve in the Armed Forces

  • Saudi Arabia has made the announcement that the women in its conservative kingdom can now serve in the armed forces of the country as private first class, corporeal or sergeant.
  • Last year, the country had allowed the women to join its security forces and also allowed them to drive and to go abroad without consent from a male guardian.

4. WHO India Country Cooperation Strategy launched by the Union Health Ministry

  • The Union Minister for Health, HarshVardhan has launched the 'WHO India Country Cooperation Strategy ( CCS ) 2019-2023: A Time of Transition'.
  • The aim is to provide a strategic roadmap for the WHO to work with the Indian Govt. towards achieving its health sector goals, improving the health of its population, and to bring transformative changes in the Indian health sector.

5. GEMINI, a portable receiver, to help fishermen

  • GEMINI, a box-shaped portable receiver, can be used by the fishermen in the country to get storm alerts and also the probability of fish catch in the surrounding areas.
  • The receiver is built by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) in collaboration with Accord, a private company.
  • The receiver has an antenna and an in-built battery that can last up to three to four days.
  • The range can also increase up to 300 nautical miles.
  • It works on GAGAN developed by ISRO, Airport Authority of India and is India made GPS ( Global Positioning System).
  • The current cost is Rs. 9000 which is expensive for an average fisherman but attempts are being to subsidize it to as much as 90%.
  • It can easily help to 9,00,000 fishermen in the country.

6. Mahatma Gandhi National Fellowship Programme

  • The Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has launched the Mahatma Gandhi National Fellowship Programme with IIM Banglore.
  • This is a two-year fellowship program in which the students will train with district administration officials.
  • The aim of the program is to provide academic inputs and field experience to understand & contribute to the creation of a district-level skill development ecosystem.
  • The program launched in 75 districts across Gujarat, Karnataka, Meghalaya, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh & Uttarakhand.

7. Centre has approved 5% additional DA/DR

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the additional 5% Dearness Allowance to Central Govt. Employees & Dearness Relief to Pensiones.
  • It is an increase of 5 % over the existing rate of 12% of basic pay or pension.
  • This will benefit to around 49.93 lakh Central Govt. employees & 65.26 lakh pensioners.
  • DA/DR is paid to the Central Govt. employees /Pensioners to adjust the cost of living and to protect their basic pay/pension from erosion.
  • DA/DR is revised twice a year from 1st January and 1 July.

8. Union HRD Ministry to launch DHRUV Programme

  • The Union Ministry of Human Resource & Development will launch the 'Pradhan Mantri Innovative Learning Programme- DHRUV' from the ISRO headquarters at Bengaluru on 10 October 2019.
  • Through this program, talented children will be identified and encouraged to enrich their skills and knowledge and will be mentored and nurtured by renowned experts in different areas.
  • 60 outstanding students have been selected in the first batch.
  • The program will be of around 14 days, from 10 October-23 October 2019.
