Lok Sabha has passed the bill to remove leprosy as the ground for divorce
·        Lok Sabha, on 7 January, has passed the bill in which leprosy is removed as a ground for divorce.
·        The bill is passed on the basis that claiming divorce on the ground of leprosy is discriminatory as the disease is now curable.

Cabinet approved a Constitution Amendment Bill to provide 10% reservation to economically backward classes
·        The Union Cabinet has approved the Constitution Amendment Bill to provide a 10% reservation for economically backward classes.
·        The reservation will be provided in the general category and will cover the Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists & other minority communities and for those castes who do not avail reservation in any category.
·        People who are eligible should belong from general category, who earn less than Rs. 8 lakh annually, who own farmland below 5 acres, who own a house measuring less than 1000 sq. ft.
·        Through the amendment Art. 15 & 16 of the Constitution will be amended.

World Bank President, Jim Yong Kim will step down on February 1
·         World Bank President, Jim Yong Kim will step down on February 1 which is much before the end of his term in 2022.
·         World Bank CEO, Kristalina Georgieva will assume the post of World Bank President from February 1.

20 Crore workers to go on strike on Jan. 8 & 9
·        According to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions ( CITU ), 20 crore workers will go on strike on January 8 & 9 against the anti-worker, anti-national policies of the Modi govt.
·        It will be the largest strike against the govt.

Indian Navy will commission air base in the north of Port Blair
·        The Indian Navy will commission a new air base 100 miles north of Port Blair, capital of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
·        The base is INS Kohassa and will be commissioned on 24 January 2019 by Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba
·        It will be the fourth air base in India and the third naval air facility in the archipelago.
·        It will be closer to South East Asia than the Indian mainland.

6.6 magnitude of earthquake hits Indonesia
·        6.6 magnitude of earthquake has hit Indonesia’s north, northwest of the city of Ternate in the Molucca Islands.
·        No tsunami warning is issued.

Ministry of Tribal Affairs has organized the National Tribal Festival in Nov. 2018
·         The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has organized the National Tribal Festival/Carnival in collaboration with Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED) at New Delhi, from 16 Nov. to 30 Nov. 2018.
·         The festival was named as ‘Aadi Mahotsav’.
·         The festival was organized to showcase the glimpses of the rich cultural heritage of tribal people of the country through their unique, forms of folk dances, songs, cuisine, exhibition, painting art & craft, medicinal practices.

Ministry of Tribal Affairs has implemented “Development of PVTG” Scheme
·         Ministry of Tribal Affairs has implemented “Development of Particularly Vulnerable Tribes Groups (PVTG)” for the welfare of PVTGs.
·         This scheme enables the States/UTs to focus on the areas that they consider is relevant to PVTGs and their socio-cultural environment while retaining the culture & heritage of the community.
·         The scheme includes activities like housing, land distribution, land development, agricultural development, animal husbandry etc.

Ministry of Civil Aviation will organize ‘Global Aviation Summit 2019’
·        The Ministry of Civil Aviation will organize Global Aviation Summit 2019 in collaboration with FICCI from 15 to 16 January 2019 at New Delhi.
·        Theme- “Flying for all”.
·        The purpose of the summit is to provide a platform to the aviation fraternity to showcase the challenges of the sector in the newly developing growth spots.
·        An mobile app has also launched named The GAS 2019 in December 2018 in this regard.
·        Additionally, according to the International Civil Aviation Organisation, there will be a 100% increase in global air travel by 2030.

The 106th Indian Science Congress in concluded on 7 January 2019
·         The 106th Indian Science Congress, which was being organized at the Lovely Professional University, Jalandhar is concluded on 7 January 2019.
·         It was a five-day session and was inaugurated by the P.M Narendra Modi on 3rd January 2019.
·         Nobel Laureates Avram Hershko & F. Duncan M. Haldane have also made their presence in the event and also inaugurated the Children’s Science Congress.
·         ‘Pride of India’, an exhibition was also held wherein the replicas of Akash Missiles, Brahmos Missiles, GSLV-MK III, Astrocat Satellite, INSAT-4A, IRNSS Satellite.
·         55-feet, 25-ton massive robot ‘Metal Magna’ was installed at the entrance gate of the event.
·         37 awards were given in the categories of Young Scientists, Best Poster Presentation & Pride of India Exhibition.
